The Independence Place is a facility for services to be provided for individuals with ASD and typically developing individuals with social needs. It is also a place for parents, the schools and community to come together for support and workshops to meet the needs of these individuals.

Mission and Vision

Our Mission is to provide a place where needed programs for individuals with ASD and social challenges can be provided,  and that families and community agencies can join together for support in working toward a common goal—for each individual to reach their maximum potential for independence in adulthood.

We believe and envision that through quality programming and collaboration with families, schools, and the community firm foundations for children with ASD can be built and continued growth can be facilitated throughout life’s transitions toward adulthood. Our end goal is for each individual to achieve the maximum possible integration into society and to the utmost of their ability become independent, productive members of the home communities in which they will live.

Moving Up too Middle School Social Group

Moving Up too is an ongoing group to facilitate social development and address skills specific to success in Middle School and preparation for High School based on each individual’s personal goals. Social Thinking, Executive Functions, Daily Living Skills and Leisure needs are addressed. Participants attend a community outing for facilitated practice/generalization of skills to build social competence in age-appropriate natural settings. Social Thinking (Michelle Garcia Winner) concepts guide the instruction and interventions. Youth will learn how to be a social thinker, how to overcome their individualized social difficulties, watch videos taken during activities and give each other feedback as well as evaluate progress on their goals.

A social group for children ages 3-5. Techniques are used to facilitate development of social, communication and behavior. Strategies include floor play, joint attention, self-regulation, ABA, and symbolic play. Children are introduced to social thinking concepts (Michelle Garcia Winner).

Fun with Friends

Programming includes intense social learning and development of friendships. Activities include facilitated social play, social skills, role-plays, social stories, video modeling, and social thinking concepts (Michelle Garcia Winner). Participants attend a community outing for facilitated practice/generalization of skills to build social competence in natural settings. Cost: $40.00 per child – $20 for siblings
